Methodology

How we rank

By the Best Business Technology Advisory Team. Updated October 2026.

Every ranked list on this site follows the same written criteria. Rankings are editorial judgment by our advisory team, never paid placement: providers cannot buy a position, do not see a ranking before it publishes, and have no say in what we write.

What we evaluate

Network and service footprint

Where a provider can actually deliver, at what capacity, and how it performs at the edges of its coverage rather than in its best market.

We check published coverage and service descriptions against what the provider has quoted and delivered for buyers in that geography, and we note the markets where it declines to bid.

Pricing transparency

How predictable the quote is, how much of the real cost shows up only in the contract, and how pricing behaves at renewal.

We compare the headline rate with the fully loaded quote: setup fees, add-ons, minimums, usage true-ups, escalators, and what the second term costs. Published price lists and contract documents count; sales claims do not.

Support quality

What happens after the sale: escalation paths, time to resolution, and whether the support reputation matches the sales pitch.

We weigh the published support tiers and service levels, the credits a provider actually pays when it misses them, and what buyers report once a contract is a year old.

Contract flexibility

Term lengths, growth and shrink rights, exit terms, and how a provider behaves when a customer's needs change mid term.

We read the order form and the master agreement: auto-renewal notice windows, early termination charges, price protection, and whether seats or sites can come down as well as up.

What our advisors see across live customer quotes

We pull real quotes across competing providers every week. That live pricing and win-loss picture feeds every ranking and keeps it honest.

When a provider quotes sharper than its list, loses on a requirement it claims to serve, or wins on something its marketing never mentions, the ranking reflects it.

How entries are chosen and ordered

The field for a ranking is every provider in the category that we can quote across the market. An entry earns its place by fitting at least one of the buying paths the ranking names, and the order follows fit across the situations buyers bring us most often, not size, brand, or how a provider pays us. Each entry states who the provider fits, where it wins, where it does not, and how its pricing behaves.

A provider in a ranking links to its profile only once that profile carries a written verdict and description; until then the name appears without a link. The top picks page shows the first entry of each category ranking and changes only when the ranking does.

How often rankings are refreshed

Every ranking, guide, comparison, and pricing analysis carries the date it was last updated. We review each ranking at least once a year, and sooner when a provider changes materially: new pricing, an acquisition, a withdrawn service, or a pattern of missed service levels in the quotes we see. A refresh updates the same page rather than creating a new one.

Independence

Providers pay Best Business Technology a referral commission when you become their customer, and you never pay us. That commission has no bearing on who is ranked, where, or how a provider is described, and our advice includes “keep what you have” when that is the honest answer.
